VAT/CST Registration

Value Added Tax or VAT as the name suggests is a tax on the value added to the Goods in each step of the production and distribution process. The final VAT tax is however borne by the end consumer as the dealers are allowed to retain the tax collected on his/her purchases against the VAT tax paid by the dealer.

If you are having interstate transactions then CST is must, however, if the trade is within the state then VAT is sufficient.

About VAT/CST

  • Compulsory registration

Any dealer whose total turnover of sales or purchase exceeds the limits specified under the Act is required to be registered under VAT. The limit is total turnover of Rs.5, 00,000/- with taxable turnover of Rs.10, 000/-in the preceding year or the current year.

  • Voluntary Registration

A dealer whose turnover has not exceeded the threshold can apply for voluntary registration but such dealer shall have to deposit Rs.25, 000 as advance Tax.

  • Benefits of being registered

When you calculate the amount of VAT you have to pay, you can claim input tax credit for the VAT you have paid on your business purchases. You can issue tax invoices to your customers who are registered dealers. This will enable them to claim Input Tax Credit for the VAT paid to you.

  • Single Registration For Multiple Business Place

If you have more than one place of business within the State, the threshold limit applies to all such business places taken together. You are required normally to make a single application for registration.
